My Guys!
I just wanted to let everyone know that it has been 5 months now since the kidney transplant. Everything is going so well-Thank God!
Derek does lab work every week and UCSF is gradually tapering him off the high dosages of medication. Derek feels very much alive again, Thank You God & Frankie! He's slowly turning back to himself again as regards to his energy level, eating abilities, social level, and of course his temperament. lol I'm so grateful to have my old Derek back!
Frankie is doing awesome too! He was just over the other day and looks just as wonderful as he is! Frankie says he feels no different...Other than he swears he gave Derek his "skinny kidney" for reasons I won't go into! lol
Frankie on the other hand immediately went back home a few weeks after his surgery to No. Carolina to visit his parents and family...So there's been No stopping Frankie.
Since the transplant the guys have already done their Disneyland trip together and had a Wonderful time! Gee, who wouldn't at the happiest place on earth!
Frankie works at Tiffany's in Monterey and What a Small World It truly is! He waited on None Other than Derek's Transplant Surgeon Dr. Nancy Asher in his store! It was quite an honor and experience for Frankie.
Derek is now planning our annual Halloween Costume Party. Derek being the Mastermind that he is at decorating new themes and so forth, keeps trying to out do his previous year. So let's see what he dreams up this year!
That's the Latest and the Greatest news today.
Thanks for your continual support and concerns!
Love all who care,
Mother Nancy

Derek's Recovery Update
Other than that...Derek is recovering quite well-Thank God!
Derek spent Tuesday with Frankie and Ryan in Monterey/Carmel. As usual they had a wonderful time together at the Aquarium and Eating.
Frankie is also doing exceptionally well in his recovery...but doesn't He deserve to???
He's "Frankie!"-I love em! These young men are truly exceptional people...with great hearts, lots of humor, laughter, and love. I'm so proud of them and love them all!
A special Thanks to Amy and Ryan for being there for both of them every step of the way, you two are very special people in all our lives.
Thanks to Everyone that has donated and Continue to Support the Fundraising, it has been a Huge Sense Of Relief to Both these young men!
God Bless You All!

Thank You Frankie!
It’s so hard to find the right words for someone like you. From day ONE, you had always had my back. You’re most likely the only one in this world that gets me and understands me. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I feel like we were meant to meet each other in our life time, and we did in the best way! We became best of friends and now in a creepy way we are blood brothers.
The time you put aside to get the ball rolling for all this to happen as I was in deep depression and not wanting to deal with anything. You pushed, and pushed. Without that I don’t think any of this would have came about. I love you for the extra pushing and the time you put into this happening.
Now we can go on our long trips to WHEREVER! And WHATEVER days!!! And as many days as we want to!!!! No More DIALYSIS!
I thank you so much. You are one in a million! You gave me hope when I didn’t think there was any...
Love you always!
My best friend, my brother,
Derek Lee Lubag

Now That I'm HOME!
As for the kidney to Fail again there is a 38% chance it could.
As for Rejection the chance is always there. That’s why I have to get regular labs done 2 to 3 times a month, if not more.
I have so many of you to Thank! From all my friends, my family, people I don’t even know that where so kind to send in their donation’s. The help we had with the fundraiser. Amy and her part to keep you all informed when I was down in the hospital. Everyone that pulled together and prayed, sent their well wishes, cards, flowers, mail, texts, calls, my space, email cards, and their Love. The one's that kept me up at night laughing.
The Great Ass staff at UCSF. I can never ever thank you all enough! Now, I have a million thank you cards to write. :) Love all who loved me, Derek Lee Lubag

Time to Recover
I am home and couldn't be happier! It has been a long week, one of the longest in my life. I heard from Derek today and he is on his way home, TONIGHT! I am so excited for him, I was only there 3 1/2 days and I was desperate to get OUT and get some fresh air. I am sure he is beside himself with the prospect of getting fresh air and resting quietly at home.
Mother Anita and Ryan (my cat Indie too!) have been taking great care of me. We go on walks and mini outings (laundry on Thursday was the big event of the day), take a nap and watch some Planet Earth. I have no pain at all, I just tire very quickly and am slowly regaining the use of my abdominal muscles. It is just so nice to be home and relaxed. I am so lucky to have such an understanding employer, Tiffany&Co. really cares and is allowing me all the time I need and will have my job for me when I am able to return. I could not ask for a better situation to be in in order to help my friend Derek!
Thank You again everyone who reads this... and I have to thank Amy for all the updates she has been posting while Derek and I heal.
Time for a Nap!

It's not the news we wanted...
They will start Derek on a new medication tonight and we will all have to think positive and hope for the best that it means the kidney takes. Derek has at least another week ahead of him in the hospital as a result of this set back.
Please keep him in your prayers.
Surgery Day Photos

I didn't take a ton, but you can view pictures from the day of surgery here - http://theprofessionalfriends.smugmug.com/gallery/4456782_bjZKw#262062211
You'll see Frankie and Derek didn't take long to get their sense of humor back after surgery....
Still waiting...
He had a biopsy this morning and they are running labs on all his urine from yesterday.
As soon as they get the tests back they will know what the next step is.
At this point things aren't progressing as fast as they'd like. The three possibilities are - rejection of the kidney, rejection of one or more of the meds OR an imbalance in the meds.
Derek will be getting his results this evening and as soon as I know I will pass the information along.

Almost everyone is home...
Derek on the other hand - is still in his room at UCSF. He went for an ultrasound this morning. Tomorrow they'll do some labs and a biopsy to make sure everything is going in the right direction. Right now they are still in the process of trying to get all the meds balanced right in order to achieve total success with the transplant. He is doing everything in his power to heal and keep this kidney going strong!
I posted pictures last night from the fundraiser dinner. Thanks again to Noah Andrews Photography for donating the time to come out and shoot the event for us. You can view the pictures by clicking here - http://theprofessionalfriends.smugmug.com/gallery/4446229_LV73h#261344702
I will have pictures from the hospital posted tomorrow.

Wow...
Frankie is going home tomorrow already. He should be out around noon tomorrow. I think he'll be so happy to be back in Pacific Grove by the sea and with the butterflies, finally able to get some fresh air. Being at home is sure to speed his recovery.
Derek is tube free. No more control of his pain killers through a drip, no more IV. Solid foods and pain killers only every few hours. So long as everything keeps going the way it's going right now, he should be going home Tuesday.
I'll get some pictures of Frankie and Derek tomorrow before I head home and I'll post them all for you soon.
Also - News 10's Dan Adams did an update on Derek and Frank's story. You can read the update by clicking here - http://www.news10.net/display_story.aspx?storyid=39006

Day 2 -
Things are progressing so well! Ryan and I went to the hospital last night after we had dinner to see both Frank and Derek and they were doing AMAZING!
Frankie went for his first walk last night around 10pm and he did great. He made it for a great walk then hung out in his room, standing around and sitting in his chair. He's been up and moving again today and although he's a little sore today, he's doing amazing.
I sat with Derek for 20 or 30 minutes last night and he was in a much better frame of mind - which means not making up crazy stories about Frankie being in line for Ice Cream and people bowling in the room next door! His pain wasn't too bad and the kidney is functioning wonderfully! Just having the kidney in for a few hours, you can see the color in his skin improving, he's feeling better and my favorite saying yesterday - YAY FOR PEEPEE!!!!! I never thought I'd be celebrating anyone but a 2 year old going pee!

We can all breathe a sigh of relief...
Frankie and Derek are both in their own PRIVATE rooms and resting comfortably. Frankie is feeling great and the celebrity of the hospital. All the nurses LOVE him and everyone has asked about our "Frankie Saves" shirts.
Derek is coherent and hanging out in his room making his classic dirty jokes.
We're taking pictures and actually having fun.
Thank you so much for your prayers!
WE'RE DONE!!!
THE KIDNEY IS IN AND FUNCTIONING!!!!
THANK GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FRANKIE IS IN RECOVERY!!!
They have the kidney inside Derek and they're hooking it up right now and getting it running!!
I'm so excited!!!!!!!!
Amy
Frankie and Derek are in!!
Right now both boys are in surgery.
Frankie went into the O.R. at 8am, happy and free rambling on and enjoying his drugs.
They time the surgery so the kidney comes out of Frank and spends the least amount of time as possible out of a body.
Around 8:45 they rolled Derek into the O.R. and true to his nature, had the nurses laughing as he went.
We should be hearing on Frank's status soon!!
Wake Up San Francisco!!
It's bright and early Friday morning.
Finally, surgery day is here!!
I just wanted to take a quick minute before we all walk down to UCSF to ask one last time for all your prayers and positive energy.
I'll keep you all updated as things progress.
Amy

Tomorrow is the Day
Sunday's party was fantastic! The love and support from everyone there was so sincere. I am sure everyone has tomorrow's surgery on their mind and is wishing us the best. I am feeling very relaxed, actually, about everything and I will tell you why.
1. UCSF is the leader in this procedure world wide, Derek's surgeon is the Chair for the Department of surgery and has been performing transplants since 1964. My surgeon is Dr. Kang, he is a young talent that has had no complications on his record for the 8 years hes been doing nephrectomys.
2. So many people are sending us prayers and positive thoughts, Derek's family is so grateful and my family is very proud.
3. The generously given donations have lessened financial burdens, this is something that was such a concern for me, and thanks to our wonderful com unity, I no longer have to focus on a tight budget.
4. My dad is here now, My mom is on her way over to help care for me. Ryan has been more helpful then he knows.
5. The humanity involved, not just with my gift of a kidney, but the genuine interest in our well being from the doctors, family, and friends is profound.
With all these factors in place I feel confidant in my choice and I am ready. Thank you so much everyone. Amy will be updating this site immediately with news of our recovery.

Cross Your Fingers...
As of this morning the surgery will be postponed. Of all the people in the world to get sick this week - Derek was the one it happened to.
This DOES NOT, i repeat, DOES NOT mean the transplant will not happen - it just means it will be postponed until Derek is completely healthy again. We don't want to take any risks in the kidney rejecting...
So take a minute today and send your positive thoughts Derek's way...

Where Almost There.....
Well it is not too much longer! Derek and I have a pre-surgery meeting on the 21st in San Francisco with the Surgens and our Transplant Coordinators. Thinking about this gathering and realizing the team of people around us: doctors, nurses, my family, Derek's family, our friends, those who wish us well, it just shows true human compassion. I cant help but be moved by it. The fund raising party is less than a week away; when I see everyone there I will feel such a swell of support.
I find it fascinating that so many people are affected, touched, and sincierly showing their interest in our well being. Please feel free to leave comments or ask any questions. Sometimes I think people want to know more about me if they are not familiar, or if you don't know Derek ask about him! It would be fun and I find this inspiring.
Thank You!

I'm sure you all have seen the news report online or live on News 10. At the time of the interview there was a question that was asked about; How I really feel about Frankie giving me his kidney? Right then and there it hit me like a ton of bricks...What he was doing and giving to me. All of a sudden I Realized how Real this all is and how soon it was going to happen.
He is giving me my life back, one I lost almost three years ago!
I have another chance to live NORMAL, and enjoy the things I once use to.
Because of him I can be human again. How LUCKY I am to have someone like Frankie in my life. Even my Cowpie (Amy) having her working her hardest arranging this fundraiser and updating our blogs. She's always been there for me, helping me get through my emotional break downs. I love these two weirdo's as if they were my own family!

How this Came to Be...
In July 2005, we came back from our Disneyland 50th celebration vacation. I was with Frankie & Amy as we frequently go to Disneyland.
I came back sick with what I thought was only a common cold. I was down for almost a month fighting this cold and just couldn’t seem to get better. I was losing weight, couldn’t eat much, I was throwing up. I felt as if I was about half dead. My mom kept telling me to go to the doctor, but I wouldn’t. My mother couldn’t handle seeing me sick anymore; she took me to the ER and we waited the whole day in the waiting room before being seen that evening. It was then when we were told that my kidneys had completely shut down/ renal failure. At that time, I was given EMERGENCY DIALYSIS! I was told that if I had gone another day without receiving dialysis I would have died. I was in the hospital for three weeks. It was at that time I felt like my life had come to a complete halt! I fell into a deep depression for about a year and a half.
I was going to dialysis 3 times a week for 4 hours a day, coming home sick, sleepy, and out of it. If I had one good day of the week where I felt alive I was lucky. It was a completely different lifestyle for me. I had to accept that this is the way my life had to be.
There are so many people that kept me going and stood by me, as I faced this hardship in my life and one is my mother. Not only is she my backbone, my best friend, she is my ROCK.
From coming with me to every doctor’s appointment, taking me to the hospital, and staying by my side through this life changing experience.
It hasn’t been easy for her either to see all of this happening to me.
Another person who has stood by me is my closest friend Frankie. He is my best friend, my buddy, and my hero. He is my gift to a second chance at life. As soon as he found out that my kidneys shutdown, he didn’t think twice about giving up one of his kidneys for me. He gathered so much information on kidney transplants and researched on what he needed to do to become a candidate for donating a kidney. He did all this groundwork and research then brought it to us. He is the one, who got us to where we are today! For that I am forever grateful, I owe him everything.
When I met Frankie, he was the tallest, goofiest person I had ever met in my life.
In 1997, my junior year in Tracy high school, I auditioned for “West Side Story” and that is where Frank Celentano and I met. He was so carefree and was totally himself. Frankie has always been a positive and ambitious person trying to research and finding a way to do anything he wants.
Ever since we met we have been the greatest of friends. There is never a boring moment when we’re together. You name it and we’ve done it! You’re always safe when you’re with him, no matter what you do. He can make something so dull into something “so magical…so mystical.” He was always a welcomed person in our household as if he was a part of the family. Right down eating all my chips and snacks, to raiding the refrigerator!
This will be our 11th year of friendship and now because of Frankie’s great deed, we can have 11 thousand more years, thanks to his gift to me. I hope everyone can find their Frankie in life, Thank God I did!

Thank You For Being a Friend
Monday, January 28, 2008
Where it all began...
I remember it all very well looking back it was the spring of ’97. The 2 high schools of Tracy California joined forces to produce West Side Story. My 1st ever encounter with Derek Lee Lubag was watching him audition for a role by singing “A Whole New World”. He did all right, a little pitchy and sung through the nose, good enough for a lead as Bernardo. At the time I had no idea how much that show would affect my life nor did I know that this kid from another school would quickly become a lifelong friend. West Side Story was a success and the best part was the bonds made with others involved, who Derek and I are still friends with to this day. I guess theater magic doesn’t just affect the audience.
There have been adventures. Many crazy, silly, stupid, and utterly fantastic adventures. Frankie and Derek adventures include but are not limited to: commuting to Delta College together, skipping school to watch All My Children, waiting for Father Frank to pick us up at a police station in San Francisco when Derek’s 2 day old car was stolen, working together at Structure, the un-countable last minute trips to Disneyland where we would pretend to be up and coming recording artists while in line for Pirates of the Caribbean, oh and lets not forget Derek’s freak-out in Mexico, movies, musicals, parties, and all the abandoned caves, houses, theaters, schools and other forbidden places we would break into without even thinking twice about it. Through all this our friendship turned into a brotherhood where both of our parents considered us a member of their family. An honor we both cherish to this day.
Much has happened since those West Side Story days. Derek and I along with friends like Amy and Ryan have so many memories. We have created these bonds, so deep and intertwined; bonds that only develop from growing up together, sharing our dreams together, laughing together and overcoming adversity together. Derek did not have to look any further then is friend when he needed a kidney. My reason for helping is simple: I want the memories and the silly adventures to continue. I want my friend to be healthy again. What better way to show the impact Derek has had in my life then doing something for him that will symbolize our very real connection?
